Meet the Trainers

More than 200 years of joint experience goes into the award-winning training at the g-lec Skills Academy. Here are some of the trainers that make up our team, who take a great pride in turning out into the marketplace a high standard of skilled engineers.

Ron Dial

A highly-qualified gas trainer, Ron brings to g-lec over 40 years’ experience in the gas industry, starting as an apprentice straight from school. After many years as a service engineer, he began training and assessment in 1990. An ex-British Gas trainer and assessor, he has been a trainer with the gas-elec group since 2003.

Gordon Gosling

Gordon Gosling

Like Ron, Gordon also has over 40 years’ trade experience; he originally started his working life as a tool maker’s apprentice but quickly transferred to the building industry. “I was looking for a trade whose skills would be unlikely to be replaced by a robot. Water is the source of life and choosing plumbing would enable me to work anywhere in the world.” He joined gas-elec in 1996 and is now a director of the company. As well as being our resident plumbing trainer, he audits the technical performance of the gas-elec engineers.

Michael O’Flynn

Michael O'Flynn

Michael has over 15 years' experience in the field, with a heavy emphasis on inspection and testing of electrical installations and equipment. He joined gas-elec in 2001. Since then, Michael has taken responsibility for ensuring that all gas-elec engineers are familiar with the electrical services offered by the company, along with all procedures for reporting and certification of their work.

John Pett

John is a C.I.T.B. approved assessor carrying out assessments in approved centres. He has over 39 years’ experience in the gas industry, many of which have been spent training others. He spent 25 years working for British Gas, starting as an apprentice gas fitter and working up to become training officer where he designed and implemented the use of open learning environments, course material and the learning style within British Gas S.E. He carries out ACS Training/Assessment and Energy Efficiency training for Sussex Downs College and the Plumbing Academy, as well as the g-lec Skills Academy.

David Roydhouse

David Roydhouse

David has 38 years’ experience in the electrical installation and associated training industry. He is an Incorporated Engineer, a full Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and a Member of the Institute of Home Safety. David worked for 15 years with the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contractors (NICEIC) progressing through various roles to senior tutor in 2004-2005 delivering inspection and testing courses and five day courses for Part P building regulations applicants. An expert in Periodic Inspection Reporting training, he has co-written the training courses material for the new Domestic Registered Installers' EPC course. He acts as a consultant to the Electrical Safety Council and continues to provide guidance on NICEIC publications and their suite of new learning videos.

Terry Gray

Terry Gray has over 30 years' experience in the industry having originally served an electrical apprenticeship. In the early years, Terry worked in food and pharmaceutical industries as an electrical engineer designing/installing manufacturing control systems, and then spent 6 years as a lecturer in electrical installation work at two colleges in the Romford, Essex area. Following that Terry moved to the NICEIC as an office based engineer in London before taking up a position with the Electrical Contractors' Association as Regional Manager London. Terry now works as an independent trainer/assessor servicing a range of City & Guilds courses including the latest 17th Edition courses. In addition, Terry undertakes assessments on site for contractors wishing to become Part P Installers registered with the NICEIC.

Steve Whitton

Steve Whitton

The latest addition to the team is Steve Whitton who, as a qualified Home Inspector, has been training Domestic Energy Assessors for g-lec since November 2007. Steve worked in the public sector for many years, and made a positive career change in 2006. Reading about the shortage of Home Inspectors for the new HIPs, he recognised this as a good opportunity and studied to be a Home Inspector, bringing hands-on experience of conducting Domestic Energy Assessments to the training programme.
